A person wrote into one of those “Dear Abby” types of writers. Their spouse of just two months had just asked them for a divorce, which they obviously didn’t want. They wanted to know what to do. And by the way, the standard answer of all these writers is…seek counseling. This option was off the table as their spouse already rejected going.
I loved what the writer had to say. “The sobering reality of life is that we can’t change anyone else…and we can’t ‘make’ someone else do something they don’t want to do. The only person we can hope to change is ourselves – and even that requires a lot of work.”
A changed situation starts with allowing Jesus to change you. A nicer outcome begins with you letting the Word of God wash your brain of the lies you hold by exchanging the lies with the truth and then exercising those truths.
This changed life, though, takes time and is a hard fought battle. God’s Word gives no illusions to anything otherwise. Paul writes in 2 Corinthians 10:3-5 that we are in a war, the weapons we use are not of this world, our enemy can’t be seen, and the battleground is our mind.
There is indeed hope from The Counselor! Jesus is in the life changing business. He is the author and finisher of your faith. He will complete the job that He started in you (Phil. 1:6). Keep up the good fight. You can win today and will ultimately win tomorrow when you see Jesus face to face (1 Jn. 3:1).
Admit you have battle, surrender your situations and your way of fighting them to Jesus, and then get better at listening to and following Him. Change is hard, but it’s not impossible. All things are possible through Jesus Christ our Lord!
